Blog: Privacy

With new media being completely digital and on the web, many privacy and confidentiality issues arise through these platforms. For example, there are many stalkers and criminals who create social media accounts with fake identities. Through these fake identities, they may pretend to be your colleagues, classmates, or friends. After you have accepted them into your connections, they will have access to your biography, photographs, videos, and posts. These criminals may sell this information to various buyers and your personal life would be exposed to the public. Oftentimes, you do not even know that you have been hacked or stalked until you find your personal information on websites you have never been on in your life. It becomes extremely dangerous to post private information that you do not want the public to know about.

Also, there are many hackers out there who would attach viruses to digital files such as images, videos, video games, and documents. After your computer has been infected they may key log your account usernames and passwords. With this information, hackers may have access to your bank account information, friends list, chat logs, and every aspect of your personal life.

These are all major issues that come along with new media and being exposed to the web. It is extremely important to protect your personal information so that your privacy and confidentiality is not intruded.

  1. Hey Curtis,

I recently incorporated privacy in my term paper as I found it a really interesting topic. I also read how hackers can gain access to your accounts using the "forgot password" option. They enter information they find on your social media accounts and reset the password. Definitely a huge concern as technology is advancing!

Blog: Next New

I would create a new media platform that is designated for college students only. The platform would require a valid student email and identification card to create an account. The platform would be a mixture of Facebook, LinkedIn, and Tinder. It would provide college students to network, hang out, and mingle. The platform would allow students from different colleges/ university to interact with one another and share their ideas on college majors, classes, career goals, and job opportunities. Aside from professional usage, it would also allow the users to upload personal pictures, videos, and messages. Other users may view these content and choose to connect with you. There will also be an option for users to select whether or not other individuals who are seeking a date can find you based on your interests, location, school, major, and other characteristics. This platform would provide college students unlimited access to a network with peers like themselves from other schools. No...

Blog: Wiki So Far

Unfortunately, I have not added any new contents to a wiki page yet. However, I have been looking at other students contributions to other wikis and have seen the amazing results to some of those pages. Some of them caught my attention and one on gaming particularly. I intend to focus my topic on new media and video gaming. I will be focusing on how new media and technology have shifted the way we play and watch video games. I will be looking up statistics on revenue and user growth as well as the number of live video game streamers and viewers. I will be adding ideas about how electronic gaming has changed the way people view gamers and why it is treated as a competitive sport now. I intend to incorporate parts of my term paper into the wiki to talk about gaming blockchain technology and how it has created opportunities to gaming and streaming companies.

Creativity and New Media

For this creativity assignment, I have created an avatar on Second Life. After completing the basic tutorial on how to walk, change viewing angle, fly, communicate, and other basic functions I continued to explore the Second Life World. I saw some new players as well so I progressed to greet them and start a conversation. However, there were only Spanish speaking players at the moment. After having no luck with starting a conversation I continued to explore the different buildings found in Second Life. I learned that there is an in-game currency called "LS" and that credit allows you to purchase various items in-game. After purchasing a different hair color and style I progressed further into the game. I went into a building where I saw various artworks, screenshots, software codes that were uploaded by different Second Life Users. After playing Second Life for a while I realized that new media can not only boost creativity but have practical usages as well. Sec...
