Blog: Privacy

With new media being completely digital and on the web, many privacy and confidentiality issues arise through these platforms. For example, there are many stalkers and criminals who create social media accounts with fake identities. Through these fake identities, they may pretend to be your colleagues, classmates, or friends. After you have accepted them into your connections, they will have access to your biography, photographs, videos, and posts. These criminals may sell this information to various buyers and your personal life would be exposed to the public. Oftentimes, you do not even know that you have been hacked or stalked until you find your personal information on websites you have never been on in your life. It becomes extremely dangerous to post private information that you do not want the public to know about.

Also, there are many hackers out there who would attach viruses to digital files such as images, videos, video games, and documents. After your computer has been infected they may key log your account usernames and passwords. With this information, hackers may have access to your bank account information, friends list, chat logs, and every aspect of your personal life.

These are all major issues that come along with new media and being exposed to the web. It is extremely important to protect your personal information so that your privacy and confidentiality is not intruded.

  1. Hey Curtis,

I recently incorporated privacy in my term paper as I found it a really interesting topic. I also read how hackers can gain access to your accounts using the "forgot password" option. They enter information they find on your social media accounts and reset the password. Definitely a huge concern as technology is advancing!

Blog: Wiki So Far

Unfortunately, I have not added any new contents to a wiki page yet. However, I have been looking at other students contributions to other wikis and have seen the amazing results to some of those pages. Some of them caught my attention and one on gaming particularly. I intend to focus my topic on new media and video gaming. I will be focusing on how new media and technology have shifted the way we play and watch video games. I will be looking up statistics on revenue and user growth as well as the number of live video game streamers and viewers. I will be adding ideas about how electronic gaming has changed the way people view gamers and why it is treated as a competitive sport now. I intend to incorporate parts of my term paper into the wiki to talk about gaming blockchain technology and how it has created opportunities to gaming and streaming companies.

Blog: P2P

File sharing is the ability to share files from one computer to another over the internet. It is extremely convenient and useful for the general users and corporations as well. It can be done in a number of ways. For example, manual sharing utilizing removable media, centralized servers on computer networks, the internet, and P2P networks. P2P sharing is short for peer to peer. It refers to computer networks that use a "distributed architecture." This means that all devices that are connected to this same network will share the workloads. This meant that each "peer" in the network is equal to the other "peers" and that there is no centralized owner of the network. The primary advantage of P2P sharing is for all "peers" to work together to deliver a specific service or perform a particular task. In "Content Producers Should take Advantage of P2P, Not Fear it" NMA Staff talks about why producers should stop preventing users to pirate ...

Blog v Wiki

The terms "blog" and "wiki" are often lumped and categorized together. Although there are many similarities in their appearance there are also many differences in their purpose, style, and audience as well.  A blog is a website with usually one author and many contributors. The author posts about different topics and contributors would comment on those posts. Blogs are usually written in a "diary-type" style and express the author's opinions about different topics. Blogs allow for interactive discussions and provide the audience with an up to date commentary in a traceable timeline. According to How can we measure the influence of the blogosphere" Kathy E. Gill states that bloggers write about topics that matter to them. Blogs may have a large or small audience and produce positive or negative opinions on certain debates. According to the study, many bloggers post to attract awareness about certain topics and express their personal opinions. So...
